I’m sorry but Mako continues to disappoint and frustrate me. He was so egotistical this episode in thinking that Korra was on pursuing her investigation because of her “jealousy” of his and Asami’s relationship. But to compound matters he had the nerve to say that their friendship would be over if she didn’t drop her duties for him.
I’m sorry, this is the girl that came into your team when you lost a player. That put her life in danger and helped rescue your brother. That saved your pro-bending team numerous times and offered you a place to live. Korra has done so much for him, but the second they disagree strongly on something, he gives her an ultimatum.
Not cool Mako, not cool.
I have to say that while Mako definitely redeemed himself a little at the end, this guy needs to grow the fuck up soon.
I mean, I completely understood why he’d be annoyed/skeptical of Korra’s accusations at first and try to defend Asami and her father - neither of them have given any reason for him not to trust them, and he knows Korra still harbors feelings for him. So while I didn’t necessarily like his reaction, it makes sense and I’m not going to hold it against him.
But when he said this…ugh. That was just such a hurtful and immature way to deal with this. Korra even tells him why she can’t drop it and instead of considering that she might just have a point, he just walks away.
I’m hoping that with them living at the Air Temple that he and Korra will bond some more and Mako will do some growing up - we still have yet to hear more about Mako and Bolin’s lives on the street (how Mako didn’t have a childhood, how he sheltered Bolin, how the streets toughened him up, etc) and we keep getting little snippets of their status throughout the series. In this episode, Hiroshi says something like “the worst of all this was that my daughter was hanging around a firebending street rat like you!” and Korra runs in to tell them that they won’t have to go back on the streets in the beginning. I don’t know how, but I’d like that to somehow affect his development and maturity over the next 5 episodes.
I agree with the opinion that Mako doesn’t quite value her like he does Asami or Bolin or anyone else - yes, he said she’s infuriating and he obviously has some issues with ignorant/privileged upbringing. We’ve gotten a few indicators that suggest that he really does care about her (unnecessarily protecting her from the 3-on-1 attack in e5, running over to hug her after she was saved by Lin, the look on his face after Korra went down into the tunnel in e6, his very sincere apology at the end of the ep) but then there are times like this where he throws her under the bus because he think she’s being immature or wrong. Ughh I don’t know. I think Mako really cares about her and just doesn’t know how to handle her or what to do with her (along with some underlying issues yet to be discussed, like his past and pro-bending and etc), and that in the upcoming eps he’s going to be faced with a situation from which he sees just how much Korra means to him and how she’s pretty much only ever tried to do the best for him and Bolin.
so uh basically, boy needs to start valuing and treating korra like a real friend and get all his feelings/issues/beliefs set straight.
also korra why do you still like him after all this
i mean besides e3 you guys haven’t bonded or hung out that extensively so yeah
let’s hope this is addressed too

I’m really hoping we get some Mako development in the next episode.

Badass characters..and Mako.
- Asami: I began to develop a friendship with the Avatar, won a drag race, and stood up to my crazy ass father!
- Bolin: I told off this annoying cop.
- Korra: I suspected a rich guy of being a mole and I was right, and I screwed up his Equalst machines!
- Lin: I proved I was truly Toph's daughter by being a badass metalbender and turning in my badge to BREAK SOME RULES.
- Tenzin: I was a total Mama bear when some assholes tried to hurt Korra and DID YOU SEE MY AIRBENDING WHEEL THINGY?
- Hiroshi: I'm pretty crazy, but I secretly funded the Equalist movement for years without anyone taking notice, and i can operate that Equalist machine like it's no one's business.
- Cabbage Man: I HAVE A FUCKING STATUE.
- Mako: ...I sneezed.

the more I think about it, maybe Korra’s mocking disdain for Asami’s ~girly~ things is actually to make a strong point about them?
I know this is a big thing in the fandom right now, how a lot of people aren’t happy with Korra for saying what she did and Bryke for including it, and it struck me the wrong way too — not just because, well, it’s not fair of her to treat Asami like that (or think that way in general) but also because Bryke has proven in A:tlA that that’s the wrong way of thinking five years ago:
- Ty Lee was “girly” but she was still a fantastic fighter and kicked ass
- Suki specifically said “I am a warrior, but I’m a girl, too,” to prove that those things aren’t mutually exclusive
- Toph and Katara had an entire makeover session in “The Tales of Ba Sing Se” where Toph discovered ‘well hey, maybe I don’t really like this stuff all the time, but it’s not really so bad, to each their own and all that’
- hell, Sokka even likes shopping!
- and Aang likes making jewelry!
so having already written those characters and made those comments in the original show, I was kind of alarmed that Bryke would go down the Taylor Swift/”she’s miss hoity-toity rich girl” route, until I thought that maybe they’re trying to… prove a point?
given Korra’s upraising, I’m not all that surprised she’d think of Asami’s “girlishness” as a weakness; she was raised to think that strength and power and fighting is what’s going to matter the most in the world, and it isn’t after she sees Asami’s skills on the racetrack that she thinks there may be more to her than meets the eye. and then, of course, Asami explains that she also knows how to fight pretty damn well, which gains her even more respect in Korra’s eyes.
so I think Korra’s comments are supposed to do a few things aside from piss off the gender-sensitive members of the audience? I think they’re meant to
- prove how much Korra needs to learn about the world
- have her realize that what works for others to be “female” doesn’t necessarily have to work for her
- understand that there’s no right or wrong way to be a woman* as long as you’re comfortable with yourself and happy being who you are (and if you don’t like it, you’re always allowed to change)
I think all this was also kind of addressed when Korra went to the bathroom at the Sato mansion and there was that little scene when she tried using the powder next to the sink. she actually, like, gives it a shot, which to me says that even if it’s a small step, now she’s a little more willing to try being “feminine” now that she understands it’s NOT a bad thing — but, of course, when that ends in utter disaster and powder is absolutely everywhere, it’s clear she’s decided “oh shit, not for me, not for me,” and that’s okay too. so it’s fine, honestly, if Korra isn’t the type of person who wants to wear makeup; what makes me feel a bit better is that she actually gave it a shot after seeing how awesome and confident and cool Asami is
despite/with it. not to say that Korra’s feeling insecure, but I like that she tries it out to see for herself instead of judging Asami strictly based on her appearance and attitude now. now even if Korra doesn’t like that “girly” stuff, at least she’ll be a little less quick to condemn it?also, for a lot of the kids in the audience, looking at Asami at a first glance, they’ll probably judge her just like Korra: all that makeup and girliness is something they’ll automatically see, and tbh they’ll most likely view her the same way Korra did at first. so there’s Korra, the protagonist, who agrees with them and looks down on Asami’s makeup/clothing/attire… but then Episode 7 happens, in which Asami turns everything around and makes a point that just because you’re traditionally feminine doesn’t mean you’re useless or thoughtless. this is Korra’s story, and we’re supposed to follow her thoughts and her journey as her experiences change how she thinks about the world and the people around her; Asami’s just something she doesn’t (yet) understand, but I think as they’ll become friends we’ll see more of Asami being her wonderful self to further change that ‘feminine = bad’ mindset. and hopefully the audience, through Korra, will see more of a gradual shift in Korra’s views, and start to view Asami in a more positive light as well, not despite her femininity, but also because it’s a part of who she is and she likes it.
so in short — I’m irked about those anti-femininity comments too, don’t get me wrong, but I think they’re there for a reason? I think they’re purposefully being set up to be revoked and dismantled later. if that makes sense…

Completely agree~
